If John Boyega doesn’t end up getting the lead in “Star Wars: Episode VII,” he may have a pretty solid backup plan already in place. THR reporter Borys Kit tweets that Boyega is being sought for one of the lead roles in Alan Taylor’s reboot “Terminator: Genesis.”
The role Boyega is up for is that of Danny Dyson, the son of Miles Dyson, the cybernetics scientist who invented the neural-net processor that eventually becomes Skynet and wipes out humanity. Emilia Clarke is on board as a young Sarah Connor, while Jason Clarke, slightly older, plays her future son, John Connor, while Jai Courtney will be baby daddy Kyle Reese. There definitely are some weird timelines at play in this movie. Filming begins soon, but probably not before Boyega finds out whether he’s landed “Star Wars” or not. Phew. I mean, there’s a clear choice here and it’s probably not “Terminator.”
Boyega was one of our Breakout Stars of 2011 for his lead role as Moses in Joe Cornish’s alien invasion thriller “Attack the Block,” and while he’s kept a low profile since, 2014 is shaping up to be a big year for the British rising star. In addition to Fox’s limited event series “24: Live Another Day,” he’s just booked the lead role as Olympian Jesse Owens in an indie biopic called “Race,” and at Sundance he impressed in drama “Imperial Dreams,” which won the Audience Award in the NEXT <=> sidebar. Add “Star Wars” or “Terminator” to that, and yeah, it’s a comeback alright.
