Former “Doctor Who” star Matt Smith, 31, has landed a major role in Alan Taylor’s new “Terminator” trilogy (formerly working under the title “Genesis”).

Plot details remain undisclosed, but what we do know so far is that Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to reprise his title role and will be joined by Dayo Okeniyi (“The Hunger Games”) as Miles Dyson’s son Danny (originally played by DeVaughn Nixon in 1991′s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”), who is describes as a “Steve Jobs genius who figures heavily into the conclusion of the film.”

Also new to the franchise are “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke who takes over the role of Sara Connor, Jason Clarke (“Zero Dark Thirty”) as Sara’s son John, and Jai Courtney (“Divergent”) as Kyle Reese. As for Smith, his character is described as a major role that will grow in prominence in the second and third films. “Terminator: Genesis” is due on July 1, 2015.

Smith, who began his career in stage plays like “The History Boys” and “Swimming with Sharks,” rose to international fame in 2010 for replacing David Tennant as the Doctor in BBC’s “Doctor Who.” He departed the series in 2013 and was succeeded by Peter Capaldi. Since then, he has landed a lead role in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut “Lost River,” which will debut at Cannes later this month.
